Methods for Studying the Quality of Life of Patients with a Dental Profile

Abstract

Actuality. Periodontal diseases are widespread dental diseases that lead to tooth loss and are characterized by adverse effects on the body and the patients’ quality of life. In medicine, the term “quality of life” is used, which means the degree of well-being and satisfaction with those aspects of life affected by the disease and its treatment. Recently, such a quantitative indicator as “quality of life” has begun to be used to determine the effectiveness of specific medical measures to preserve patients’ health. Patients’ quality of life can change with age, with specific physiological and psychological problems, as well as a result of treatment and preventive measures. Therefore, it is always necessary to evaluate it dynamically and consider it in the dentist’s activities for more practical assistance to dental patients.
Purpose: Analyze domestic and foreign literary sources and information resources on the Internet regarding the study and generalization of methods, scales, and questionnaires for researching the quality of life of dental patients.
Material and methods. The sources of information were scientific publications, electronic libraries, health care databases and information resources, and Internet search systems. Data was searched using keywords in scientific publications and search engines. The work uses bibliographic and ­analytical research methods.
Results. It was established that diseases negatively affect the patient’s quality of life, the degree of which is not always determined by the essence of the disease itself, its symptoms, or even the severity of the course. Analysis of the works of foreign and domestic authors shows that the problem of quality of life the patient appears to be relevant, to which a sufficient number of scientific works and publications are devoted, which annually increase by almost a third, creating new methods, questionnaires and scales for researching the quality of life of patients.
Conclusions. Methods of studying the “quality of life” of patients with a dental profile appear to be a promising direction in dentistry, which makes it possible to more accurately assess disorders in the health of patients, to better imagine the essence of the clinical picture, to determine the most rational method treatment, as well as to evaluate its expected results according to parameters that are at the junction of the scientific approach of specialists and the patient’s subjective point of view.
